The Greensboro College Internship Program

Samuel “Kai” Hayen interned with Murphy Wainer Orthopedic Specialists. A member of the baseball team, Kai is majoring in Health Science with a minor in Exercise Science with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.

Kai’s internship allowed him to learn everything related to physical therapy for patients who have had surgery or are trying PT to prevent having to have surgery. Shadowing the physical therapists, he learned about the process of providing treatment to patients, and the types of rehabilitation exercises appropriate for each stage of recovery based on the body part. While not allowed to touch patients, he was able to demonstrate exercises for them so that they could see the exact motion they are to do. Kai enjoyed working directly with the patients and seeing their progress as they received treatment.

Courses in Health and Kinesiology helped Kai to understand terms used at his site and gave him a foundation of the basic knowledge of the human body, which was then explained more fully during his internship. Other courses helped him with his communication with his supervisor as well as the patients.

Jenna Endsley majored in Health Sciences with minors in Biology and Exercise Science and interned with the non-profit animal welfare organization, Rescue Ranch. On a day-to-day basis, she cleaned animal enclosures, fed animals, and administered medications. She also developed animal enrichment activities, groomed bunnies, assisted in nail or hoof trimming, and spent quality time with all the animals. Jenna also learned how to give vaccinations to goats, as well as how to perform annual horse exams.

Veronica “Roni” Nickerson interned with the NC State Bureau of Investigation in their Financial Crime Investigations Unit. An Accounting major with minors in Criminal Justice and Business Administration and Economics, this site was perfect for Roni given that she wants to have a career as a law enforcement official, specializing in financial crime investigations.

Roni credited her accounting professor, Hasije Harris, with deepening her interest in financial crimes through sharing her prior experience as a forensic accountant. Professor Harris also helped connect Roni to people outside of Greensboro College. Dr John Barbrey, chair of the Criminal Justice department, was also very supportive of Roni and furthered her interest in criminal justice and law enforcement.

Shadowing financial crime Special Agents and Special Agents in other units in their active cases allowed Roni to learn about state laws, investigative duties and procedures, and an agent’s career day-to-day. Being a part of active investigations, going on victim interviews, attending informative meetings, preparing reports, observing suspect interrogations, and getting the opportunity to join the human remains dog team were some of the highlights of her internship.

Zach Atkinson majored in Exercise Science and Coaching and spent a summer as an intern for JCP Fitness. He primarily worked with clients who were already college athletes or working their way towards that goal. He learned a great deal about the commitment it took to be a personal trainer and how to operate your own business. Zach even started a walk/run club and on its first night, he had 50 participants show up.

Jovante Davis graduated from Greensboro College with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. As a student, he used LinkedIn to find his internship with Power Digital Marketing out of San Diego, California. Working in the Paid Media department, Jovante learned how to work with businesses, manage their Google Ads account, and create ad campaigns for businesses.

Jovante enjoyed interning with Power Digital Marketing because the company ensured that everyone felt like a part of the team. To help its employees, most of whom work remotely, feel connected, Power held weekly team building activities and scheduled 15-minute chats for new employees so that everyone on the team could meet one another and not feel left out.

Jovante credited the classes he took at Greensboro College with helping him to create an attractive resume and cover letter to get the internship. His Careers in Business classes helped him to create a LinkedIn profile that stood out from other applicants. Jovante now works as a SEM Strategist.

Hailey Stout majored in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and interned at Twins Lakes Community Independent and Assisted Living Facility in Burlington, where she shadowed a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and learned the facilitation of safety and aid for geriatric residents.

During her time there, Hailey attended resident assessments, facility changes for residents, volunteered with participants in community activities, and other daily tasks. She also learned how to assess residents, approach risk factors and plans, and properly document information from residents while complying with HIPAA requirements.

Classes in Counseling Theories and Death and Dying were the most helpful to her in her internship because the population were mostly elderly residents who were seeking some sort of stability during their later years of life. The bereavement tactics, proactive after-death planning, and therapeutic/active listening skills she learned proved to be very useful in her internship. She enjoyed getting to know the residents, learning their stories and histories while also helping them to be comfortable. Interacting with the patients were by far her favorite aspect of her internship.
