Greensboro College Alumna Will Publish Book on Mountain Craft and Folklore Sept. 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Catherine Slusar “Cathy” Buck ’15 has a book coming out Sept. 1 on Appalachian crafts and folklore.

“Granny Buck’s Dibs and Dabs: Appalachian Traditions and Magical Ways” covers everything from water witching to candle and soap making, love spells to crossroads and graveyards. It will be available at Barnes & Noble and BN.com.

“I have always been interested in folklore and traditions,” Buck says. “I had written other things before, but over the years I had collected information on mountain life, especially in the Appalachians.

“Having lived in a number of mountainous regions over the years, I was fascinated by the survival skills that many of these people developed. Their stories are truly marvelous and their traditions and crafts so interesting.”

Buck enrolled at Greensboro College after a decades-long and varied career running a small business and working in local government. While a student, she continued to work part-time while caring for her adult disabled son and her grandchildren.

Buck graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) from Greensboro College in 2015 with a B.A. in history and minors in English and religion. She received the Likins Award as the outstanding graduating adult student.
