College and NBA Coach Dave Hanners Will Speak to Leadership Fitness Class at Greensboro College
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dave Hanners, a longtime college and NBA basketball coach, will speak to Greensboro College’s Leadership Fitness class at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in 214 Proctor Hall East.
The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available behind the Admissions Welcome Center at the corner of West Market Street and College Place.
Hanners will speak on “The Birth and Development of the Attitude,” covering what it takes to develop an attitude to become a positive leader, as discussed in a chapter of the book “Leadership Fitness” by longtime football coach and college-athletics administrator Homer Rice. A reception will follow.
Hanners played basketball collegiately at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1972 to 1976 under head coach Dean Smith. He went on to be an assistant coach at UNC-CH, UNC-Wilmington, Furman University and East Tennessee State University, before returning to UNC-CH for 11 years, including a national championship in 1993.
He moved to the NBA in 2000 to join the coaching staff of the Philadelphia 76ers under Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown, another UNC and Dean Smith alum. In 2003 he followed Brown to the Detroit Pistons, who won the NBA Championship in 2004.
He went on to coach for the New York Knicks, Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets), and New Orleans Pelicans before retiring in 2015. He now lives in Chapel Hill.
