Greensboro College Adds Master’s Program in Theology, Ethics and Culture and Advanced Certificate in Religious Studies

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has added its fifth master’s-degree program, the M.A. in Theology, Ethics and Culture. It also is now offering an advanced certificate in religious studies.

Courses begin this fall. The two programs are to be housed in the Department of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy, chaired by Daniel Malotky, Lucy H. Robertson Professor of Religion and Philosophy.

“We are starting the program because, as a college of the church, we are driven to provide a local option for those who want to deepen their understanding of the Christian tradition, deepen their faith, and grapple with how that faith might be expressed in their lives day by day,” Malotky said.

“Though the program offers an academic degree, not ordination, it is firmly situated within the broad Christian tradition and is intended to unite academic rigor with spiritual formation.”

Subject to class capacity, classes within the program are available for any member of the public to take. The college will hold two information sessions about the program: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 and 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. Both sessions will take place in Hannah Brown Finch Memorial Chapel on campus.

Malotky says he sees three primary audiences for the program:

Recent graduates or second-career people who would like to continue, or begin, their theological education in Greensboro before moving on;
Those already engaged in some form of ministry in the church who would like to strengthen themselves in their work; and
Those who simply seek to expand the horizons of their faith.

The master’s degree will require completion of 18 credit hours of core courses in Biblical Studies, theology, ethics, and church history, plus 18 credit hours of elective courses.

The certificate requires the same completion of core courses, plus three 3-hour elective classes at the 6000 level.

To be admitted to either program, applicants must provide:

a bachelor’s degree in a related field
official transcripts from each degree-awarding institution.
transcript evaluation by a NACES-approved agency for any degree earned outside of the United States, and for evaluation of transfer credit.
a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average at the undergraduate level
a two-page statement of purposes and goals for enrolling and successfully completing the degree
for students with a bachelor’s degree from an international institution of higher education and who are not native English speakers, demonstration of English proficiency by a satisfactory score on the TOEFL. Students who have earned a master’s degree from a regionally accredited American institution may be exempt based on the discretion of the Chair, Department of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy
submission of three letters of recommendation, at least two of them from academicians
visa (for international students)
a non-refundable application fee of $35
