Greensboro College Annual Spring Streamwalk to Be Held April 21

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s annual Spring Streamwalk will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 21.

Participants should meet at the north (Market Street) end of the parking lot behind James Addison Jones Library on campus. Members of the public are invited to take part. Participants should wear pants and shoes that can get wet or dirty.

In Streamwalk, members of the college community and the public patrol College Branch, the stream that flows north along the campus’s eastern (downtown) edge, removing trash from the stream. In 2016, 31 bags were collected.

Biology professor Calhoun Bond, who supervises the event, also will assess the health of the stream.

Streamwalk grew out of a partnership between the college and the city of Greensboro more than a decade ago. The college community polices the stream at least yearly, using trash bags and gloves provided by the Greensboro Water Resources Department.

The event has grown in importance as completion of the western leg of the Downtown Greenway encircling downtown Greensboro nears. The Greenway will run alongside College Branch where railroad tracks currently lie.

Campus participation is sponsored by the Department of Natural Sciences, the Beta Beta Beta biology honor society, and the Pre-Health Club.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
