Greensboro College Counseling Director Presents Information on Student Anxiety at National Conference

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s director of counseling services, Emily Holmes, presented information on the growing prevalence of anxiety in college students at a recent national conference.

Holmes’s presentation, titled, “The Anxiety Epidemic: Promoting Cultural Change on Campus Before It’s Too Late,” discussed the rise in student anxiety and related negative outcomes.

Anxiety in college students has been linked to poor academic performance, depression, and thoughts of suicide.

Holmes’s presentation also examined the ways in which campus culture contributes to student anxiety and what can be done to promote change on campus. The presentation was based on current research and included case studies and observations from Holmes’s own clinical experience.

She gave her presentation at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ Strategies Conference Jan. 17 in Washington. The conference was intended to provide student affairs practitioners with knowledge and skills to effectively address collegiate alcohol and drug abuse prevention, mental health, sexual violence prevention and response, and well-being.
