Greensboro College Formally Recognized as a Universal Design for Learning Institution

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has been added to the Center for Applied Science and Technology’s list of institutions with Universal Design for Learning initiatives.
The designation came after a recent visit and review with executives from the center. The center, based in Boston, is the founding institution for Universal Design for Learning and promotes UDL principles in all levels of learning
UDL is an educational framework that guides the design of learning goals, materials, methods, and assessments, as well as the policy surrounding these curricular elements, with diversity of learners in mind. It seeks to accommodate various learning styles, recognizing that not all students learn in the same way.
It also is a big accomplishment for the college, says Georgieann Bogdan, director of accessibility services.
“UDL provides useful guidelines for developing curricula, selecting materials and creating learning environments that takes into account the wide variability of learners in higher education environments,” Bogdan said.
She noted that the inclusion of UDL in the most recent higher-education authorization act of Congress, in 2008, “indicates a federal recognition of the potential for UDL to improve practice in all classrooms and provide opportunities for all students to succeed.”
Greensboro College began incorporating elements of UDL several years ago. The college is committed to providing UDL across all academic disciplines within the next few years. Becoming a UDL institution is one of three “pillars” of the college’s current strategic plan.
Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.
Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
