Greensboro College Names Deirdre Sommerlad-Rogers the 2017-2018 Moore Professor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has named Deirdre Sommerlad-Rogers, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology, its Moore Professor for 2017-2018.
Sommerlad-Rogers was cited for her high degree of involvement in the education of her students, from organizing off-campus trips to preparing students to compete at national academic meetings.
She also was recognized for her service as director of the Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, an initiative aimed at helping faculty members enhance their teaching.
And she was cited for leading a team at Greensboro College in the 2016 NASA Space Apps Challenge that was one of six global winners for “Best Mission Concept,” beating out more than 1,200 other projects.
“Dr. Sommerlad-Rogers’s diligent work to secure students meaningful internships and her high standards and expectations for students in and out of the classroom are central contributing factors why her students secure jobs in sheriff’s departments, police departments, the military, social service agencies, probation and parole organizations, nonprofit work, and seats at prestigious graduate and law schools,” Paul Leslie, senior vice president and chief academic officer, said in announcing the award.
Sommerlad-Rogers holds an A.A. from DeAnza College, a B.A. and M.A. from San Jose State University, and a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University. She joined the Greensboro College faculty in 2011.
The Moore Professor Award is presented annually to a member of the college’s full-time faculty for the subsequent academic year. It recognizes an outstanding accomplishment or set of accomplishments, such as the publication of a scholarly work, the creation or performance of an artistic work, meritorious service to the college, or recognition by a professional organization.
The award was established in 1971 by the late Annie Elizabeth Moore ’27 in honor of George Edgar Moore and Minnie Moore. The recipient is selected by a committee chaired by the president of the college and including the three previous recipients of the award and three students.
