Greensboro College Names Elaine Kitchell Outstanding Graduating Adult Student
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College awarded its William Henry and Martha Grant Likins Award to Elaine Kitchell as the college’s outstanding graduating adult student during today’s virtual Commencement exercises.
Kitchell, of Greensboro, has served as the college’s Director of Conferences and Events since 2012. She graduates with a B.A. in sociology.
“Elaine represents what adult students bring to GC,” one of her professors wrote. “She is curious and eager to discover new things, values every bit of information and approaches every class assignment as an opportunity to learn. And she has the kind of positive attitude that enables – and energizes – her traditional student classmates to follow along.”
In citing Kitchell for the award, the college’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, Robin Daniel, said: “With my office directly across the hall from hers, I have observed Elaine’s office to be more than a place to plan and schedule events. It is often a place of listening, support, instruction, learning, encouragement, and rest for students and colleagues alike.
“At some point a few years ago, she mentioned to me that she had once aspired to become a professional counselor. From my perspective, I would say that she is well on her way.”
The Likins Award, named for the 16th president of Greensboro College and his wife, was begun in 1993 upon Dr. Likins’s retirement from Greensboro College. Established by Dr. Jeanne M. Likins and her husband, Dr. Joseph Flood, to honor her parents, the Likins Award honors a graduating adult undergraduate student who exemplifies the following qualities to which William and Martha Likins were deeply committed:
- Academic excellence
- Love of learning
- Commitment to service and leadership in community
- Perseverance while balancing family, education, and community activities
- Belief in attainment of a dream
- And commitment to the pursuit of lifelong education
