Greensboro College Names New Athletic Training Center for Former Trustee and Alumnus’s Parents
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College will name its new athletic training center after a former trustee and his wife in recognition of their major capital-campaign gift.
The Willie and Lisa Bullock Athletic Training Center was completed in December. Through it, the college’s athletic training program delivers traditional athletic training and sports medicine services to student athletes by:
- helping with prevention of athletic injuries.
- recognition, evaluation, and treatment of athlete injuries and illnesses.
- rehabilitation and reconditioning of all injuries incurred by student athletes.
- providing health and wellness education.
The Bullocks’ gift takes Greensboro College over the $18 million mark in its GC20/20 Capital Campaign, surpassing the initial goal of $15 million. Willie Bullock served on the college’s Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2014, and the couple have been significant donors to the college even prior to their most recent six-figure gift. The Bullocks’ philanthropy is concentrated locally in Greensboro, including the Women to Women Endowment, which Lisa Bullock co-founded.
“We are pleased to be able to help Greensboro College provide an excellent experience for student athletes and visitors to campus,” said Willie Bullock, whose son, Bill, is a 2010 graduate with a degree in business administration.
“Division III college athletics offer a powerful educational experience outside of academics, building confidence in students and instilling valuable skills that will be necessary in the professional world beyond college.”
In December, the college completed construction and moved its Athletic Training Center into the former swimming-pool space in Hanes Gym that the college had renovated in 2017. Over time, chlorine and moisture had contributed to steel deterioration in the north end of the Hanes facility, which was built in the early 1960s and named then for trustee James G. Hanes.
The college opted to fill in the pool and renovate the structure, making way for the athletic training facilities with room to spare for future locker rooms. The college’s swim program practices and competes in the college’s Royce and Jane Reynolds Family Life Center pool two blocks west of main campus.
The space vacated by athletic training is being renovated back into the main campus’s Student Center. A new coffee shop being installed this summer is made possible by a contract with Chartwells Higher Ed, the college’s new food-service provider.
“Educational institutions are ever-evolving, reallocating facilities as programs and times change,” said President Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D., who had spent nearly three decades in university administration before becoming the college’s 18th president nine years ago.
“The Bullocks’ generous gift, along with funding from Chartwells and (parent corporation) the Compass Group, was the essential item the college needed to move forward our plans to recalibrate ambitious new space usage for next year,” Czarda said.
Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.
Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and six master’s degree programs.
