Greensboro College Ranks 19th Among Southern Regional Colleges in U.S. News & World Report Listing

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has cracked the Top 20 among Southern regional colleges, ranking 19th in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best College ranks, released today.

That ranking is up from 44th in 2017.

Greensboro College also ranked No. 7 in the Southern region among Best Colleges for Veterans, a new category this year.

The magazine’s rankings are based on such factors as admission, retention, graduation, cost, peer evaluations and alumni giving participation, said President Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D.

While the college faced significant challenges in the early 2010s, it chose not to participate in such rankings. After the college began to stabilize in 2013-2014, it began to respond carefully to requests for such ranking data, Czarda said.

“This upward trend reflects the hard work, dedication and belief in Greensboro College’s mission by our faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni,” Czarda said. “Together, we will continue to advance our college toward our 200th anniversary” in 2038.

The veterans’ designation continues a tradition of working with and accommodating veterans and active-duty military personnel at Greensboro College. The school has been designated a Military Friendly® School by the publishing firm Viqtory Media, a veteran-owned company that works with and for veterans, for the past four years.

Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and six master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
