Greensboro College Recognizes Samantha Renee Saint as Outstanding Adult Undergraduate Student
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has presented Samantha Renee Saint the William Henry and Martha Grant Likins Award as this year’s outstanding graduating adult undergraduate student.
She received the award today along with her B.A. in history and Social Studies education, cum laude (with honors), during the college’s Commencement exercises.
“Having overcome some significant obstacles early in life, Samantha vowed to herself and her son, Seth, that she would graduate from college before he graduated from high school – and here we are today, honoring Samantha, as Seth prepares to graduate from Trinity High School in June,” said Robin Daniel, executive vice president and chief operating officer.
A professor who nominated Saint wrote, “Samantha understands the many challenges facing a multitude of American youth and the value of reaching those young people through Social Studies education. Considering her devotion to education of herself and others, the challenges she has overcome, she is absolutely deserving of the Likins Award.”
The mother of four children, Saint, who lives in Archdale, N.C., maintained a 3.5 grade-point average while serving in the Randolph County Schools as a long-term substitute teacher, school bus driver, and active PTA member. She also co-owns a business with her husband.
The Likins Award, named for the 16th president of Greensboro College and his wife, was begun in 1993 upon Dr. Likins’s retirement from Greensboro College. Established by Dr. Jeanne M. Likins and her husband, Dr. Joseph Flood, to honor her parents, the Likins Award honors a graduating adult undergraduate student who exemplifies the following qualities to which Dr. and Mrs. William Likins were deeply committed:
- Academic excellence.
- Love of learning.
- Commitment to service and leadership in the community.
- Perseverance while balancing family, education, career, and community activities.
- Belief in the attainment of a dream.
- Commitment to the pursuit of lifelong education.
The winner of the award is selected by the full-time faculty from among all nominees.
