Greensboro College Recognizes Traci Apple DeCongilio as Outstanding Graduating Adult Undergraduate Student
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has presented Traci Apple DeCongilio the William Henry and Martha Grant Likins Award as this year’s outstanding graduating adult undergraduate student.
The award, named for the 16th president of Greensboro College and his wife, was begun in 1993 upon Dr. Likins’s retirement from Greensboro College. Established by Dr. Jeanne M. Likins and her husband, Dr. Joseph Flood, to honor her parents, the Likins Award honors a graduating adult undergraduate student who exemplifies the following qualities to which Dr. and Mrs. William Likins were deeply committed:
- Academic excellence.
- Love of learning.
- Commitment to service and leadership in the community.
- Perseverance while balancing family, education, career, and community activities.
- Belief in the attainment of a dream.
- Commitment to the pursuit of lifelong education.
DeCongilio, of Madison, N.C., was cited not only for her academic achievement – she graduated today magna cum laude (with high honors) with degrees in both Biology/Allied Health and religion – but also her persistence. She gave birth to two children while pursuing her degree, but the professor who nominated her wrote, “… her grades and participation in class never faltered, nor did her intellectual curiosity wane.”
Her nominator added, “She always came prepared to class and is one of our most thoughtful and intellectually hungry students. She did not shy away from taking top electives and performed very well in those sections, often earning top grades.
“GC would be blessed to have more adult students like Traci who can model for our younger students how to not only balance life, work, and studies, but to do so at an extremely high level with a remarkable degree of excellence.”
