Greensboro College School of Humanities Holds Academic Honor Society Inductions (4/20/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s chapters of three academic honor societies whose subjects are housed in the School of Humanities have inducted new members.

Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society, inducted:

  • Robert “Robby” Barnes, a senior history major from New London, N.C.
  • Nicholas Haithcox, a junior history/political science major from Kernersville, N.C.
  • Stefania “Stef” Robba, a junior history/political science major from Delran, N.J.
  • Sofia Sedergren, a senior history/political science major from Bromma, Sweden

Theta Alpha Kappa, the religion honor society, inducted:

  • Abigail “Abby” Bugger, a junior religion and sociology/human services major from Raleigh, N.C.
  • Davis Cahill, a senior music-education and liberal-studies major from Pleasant Garden, N.C.
  • Aliya Graves, a senior music major from Browns Summit, N.C.
  • Matthew Monroe, a senior religion major from Greensboro, N.C.
  • Sofia Sedergren, a senior history/political science major from Bromma, Sweden

Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, inducted:

  • Kaitlin Fraley, a junior English Education major from Trinity, N.C.
  • Faith Hood, a junior language arts/middle grades education major from Kings Mountain, N.C.
  • Dorothy “Dori” Medlin, a junior sociology/cultural studies and English major from Gastonia, N.C.
  • Kinsley Prendergast, a junior criminal justice major from Mebane, N.C.
  • Laine Walston, a junior English and Communication Studies major from La Plata, Md.

Phi Alpha Theta, the nation’s oldest disciplinary honor society, was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas. Greensboro College’s chapter was chartered in 2001.

Inductees must have earned at least 12 credit hours in the discipline, with a grade-point average of 3.1 or better in those courses and an overall grade-point average of 3.0 or better. They also must rank in the top 35 percent of their class.

Theta Alpha Kappa is a national honor society for students of religion and theology. It was founded in 1976 at Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y., and today has more than 200 active chapters. Greensboro College’s chapter was chartered in 2002.

To be eligible for induction, students must have attended college for at least three semesters, have amassed 16 credit hours of religion coursework with a 3.5 or better grade-point average, have an overall grade-point average of 3.0 or better, and rank in the top 35 percent of their classes.

Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University to recognize “high achievement in English language and literature studies … and to foster the discipline of English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing.” Greensboro College’s chapter was established in 1995.

To qualify for induction, undergraduate students must have completed at least two college courses in English language or literature beyond the usual requirements in freshman English. The candidate must have a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English and in general scholarship, must rank at least in the highest 35 percent of his/her class, and must have completed at least three semesters or five quarters of college course work.

Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
