Greensboro College Student Newspaper Ties for First Place in Journalism Contest
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the third consecutive year, The Collegian, Greensboro College’s student-powered newspaper, has tied for first place nationally in its category in the annual American Scholastic Press Association awards.
The Collegian tied for first place with Elizabethtown College’s Etownian and Waynesburg University’s Yellow Jacket in the category of schools with 1,001 to 1,750 students.
The award was granted on the basis of the newspaper’s Sept. 26, 2018, and Dec. 3, 2018, print editions. The paper normally is published 10 times each academic year and also has an online edition.
Executive editors for 2018-2019 are seniors Adelaide Elliott, an English & Communication Studies and history major from Walnut Cove, N.C., and Gwyneth Navey, a history/political science major from Florence, S.C.
The award continues the Collegian’s winning tradition in the association contest. It tied for first place nationally in 2017 and 2018 and won first place outright in 2010, 2012 and 2016. It also won second place nationally in 2013 and 2015.
The association, based in College Point, N.Y., holds an annual contest that honors outstanding yearbooks, newspapers and magazines produced by high-school and college students.
Newspapers are evaluated in categories including content, design, general plan/consistency across issues, photography/art, editing, and creativity.
The Collegian’s advisor is L. Wayne Johns, professor of English. Johns also advises the staff of The Lyre, the college’s award-winning literary magazine.
He holds a B.A. from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, an M.F.A. from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. He joined the faculty in 2007.
