Greensboro College Students Inducted into Honor Societies in the Social Sciences (4/20/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fourteen Greensboro College students have been inducted into the college’s chapters of four disciplinary honor societies in the social sciences.

Pi Sigma Alpha, the political-science honor society, inducted:

Melanie Alayne Smith, a senior history and sociology/cultural studies major from Verona, N.J.

Psi Chi, the psychology honor society, inducted:

Kylee Barry, a junior psychology major from Smyrna, Ga.
Lauren Bennett, a senior liberal studies major from Catonsville, Md.
Claire Heslin, a senior special education/general curriculum major from Edgewater, Fla.
Allison Killette, a junior special education/adapted curriculum major from Whitsett, N.C.
Meegan McCarthy, a sophomore psychology and art major from Loudon, N.H.
Paris Trivette, a junior psychology major from Kernersville, N.C.

Alpha Kappa Delta, the sociology honor society, inducated:

Andrew Mails, a senior sociology major from Greensboro, N.C.
Elaine Kitchell, a senior sociology major from Greensboro, N.C.

Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal-justice honor society, inducted:

Nathan Shoe, a senior criminal justice major from Greensboro, N.C.
Melissa Garcia, a junior criminal justice major from Monroe, N.C.
Hayley Rumley, a senior criminal justice major from Snow Camp, N.C.
Bryce Huntoon, a senior criminal justice major from Summerfield, N.C.
Jesse Summers, a junior criminal justice major from Browns Summit, N.C.

Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas. Greensboro College’s Chi Beta chapter was established in 1998.

Undergraduate inductees must be at least juniors who have completed at least 10 semester-credits of work in political science, including at least one upper-division course, with an average grade of B or higher in those courses. Also, their overall GPA must place them in the top one-third of their class.

Psi Chi was founded in 1929 at Yale University and is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.

Psi Chi inductees must be at least second-semester sophomores, be enrolled as psychology majors or minors, have completed at least nine semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses, have an overall GPA in the top 35% of their respective classes and at least a 3.0 overall average on a 4.0 scale, and have at least a 3.0 average in their psychology courses.

Alpha Kappa Delta was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California and now has more than 650 chapters. It is affiliated with the American Sociological Society. Greensboro College’s Omicron chapter was established in 1991.

Inductees must be a declared sociology major or have a demonstrated interest in sociology; be at least a junior; rank in the top 35% of their academic class; and have completed at least four sociology classes at the institution with a grade-point average in those courses of 3.0 or better.

Alpha Phi Sigma was founded in 1942 at Washington State University and is affiliated with both the Association of College Honor Societies and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Greensboro College’s Mu Alpha chapter was chartered in 2012.

Inductees must have declared a major, minor or equivalent in the criminal justice or related field, have completed three full-time semesters or its equivalent, have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum GPA of 3.2 in courses in criminal-justice-related fields with at least four courses in the criminal-justice field, and rank in the top 35% of their class..
