Greensboro College Theatre Alumnus Named First Paid Manager of Charlotte’s Joedance Film Festival
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ben McCarthy ’11 has been named the first paid festival manager of Charlotte’s Joedance Film Festival.
McCarthy currently is principal consultant and owner of McArts Consulting, LLC, an arts consulting firm.
He has extensive experience in the programming, operations and funding of arts organizations, including leading fundraising efforts for the Seattle International Film Festival, the nation’s largest.
He also was executive director of Three Dollar Bill Cinema, producer of the Seattle Queer Film Festival and Seattle Transgender Film Festival.
McCarthy holds a B.A. in theatre from Greensboro College and an M.F.A. in Arts Leadership from Seattle University.
The Joedance Film Festival was established in 2010 by family and friends of Joe Restaino, who died in 2010 of bone cancer at the age of 20.
Held annually in Charlotte on the first full weekend of August, the festival now covers three nights plus a Saturday afternoon screening. Originally for films from Charlotte, the festival has expanded its footprint this year to include the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia, and has added a student-submissions category.
The festival also hosts other events throughout the year. Festival proceeds, about $205,000 to date, benefit research into rare pediatric cancers at Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s Specialty Center in Charlotte.
The Greensboro College Department of Theatre seeks to provide a strong foundation in theatre while allowing the student to emphasize in a particular area of theatre.
The coursework is integrated with the production work to provide a better understanding of the many facets of the theatre. Required participation on stage or backstage on all theatre productions allows the techniques and theories that are examined in the classroom and the laboratory to be tested in a performance setting.
Depending upon their emphasis of choice, upon completion of the degree, students will be prepared to enter graduate school or a theatre conservatory, intern full-time with a theatre organization, teach theatre or seek careers in the profession.
