Greensboro College Theatre Presents Shakespeare Comedy “Much Ado About Nothing” March 30-April 2 (3/20/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing, 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 30-April 1, and 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, April 1-2, in Gail Brower Huggins Performance Center in Odell Building on campus.

By means of “noting” (which, in Shakespeare’s day, sounded the same as “nothing,” as in the play’s title, and which means gossip, rumor, and overhearing), Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the erroneous belief that she has been unfaithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice join forces to set things right, and the others join in a dance celebrating the marriages of the two couples.

The comedy is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved; in addition to stage productions throughout the world, it has been adapted several times for television and was first adapted for film in 1913.

The 1993 cinematic adaptation, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as Benedick and Branagh’s then-wife, Emma Thompson, as Beatrice, won wide critical acclaim and also became one of the most financially successful Shakespeare film adaptations ever released.

Greensboro College’s Department of Theatre seeks to provide a strong foundation in theatre while allowing the student to emphasize in a particular area such as directing, acting, or arts administration.

The coursework is integrated with the production work to provide a better understanding of the many facets of the theatre. Required participation on stage or backstage on all theatre productions allows the techniques and theories that are examined in the classroom and the laboratory to be tested in a performance setting.
