Greensboro College Welcomes Two Alumni as Baccalaureate and Commencement Speakers
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College welcomes two alumni back to campus as speakers for the college’s upcoming Baccalaureate/Cap and Gown and Commencement ceremonies.
The Baccalaureate speaker will be the Rev. Timothy Moore ’96, director of donor development at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, an approved United Methodist seminary affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). His speech is titled, “Participate.”
An ordained United Methodist minister, Moore received a B.S. in religion and philosophy from Greensboro College, where he graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) and received the Harold H. Hutson Award, given annually to the outstanding graduating senior.
He went on to earn an M.Div. from Duke University, a Master of Letters from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, and a D.Min. from Hood Theological Seminary.
Moore has served local congregations and campus ministries in the mid-Atlantic and worked in administrative positions at the denominational level of the United Methodist Church as a program director at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry in Nashville. For nearly 20 years, he has been a professor, academic and administrative deans, a college chaplain and campus minister, and a pastor.
The author and editor of numerous articles and books, Moore most recently has published “Intersections: Faith, Church, and the Academy.” His volume “The Displaced Person: Migration, Immigration, and Personal and Spiritual Displacement” is forthcoming.
Moore was born and raised in Cullowhee, N.C. His wife, Amy Spivey ’96, also is a Greensboro College graduate and an ordained United Methodist minister. His sister, Katy Moore Mulleady, also graduated from Greensboro College in 2003. Moore and Spivey have a 12-year-old daughter, Laura-Clare.
The Commencement speaker will be Geoff Lassiter ’99, president since 2017 of the Carolina League, which has 10 teams in Class A Advanced Minor League Baseball. His speech is titled, “The View from the Valley.”
As an undergraduate, Lassiter played men’s basketball and was team captain his junior and senior seasons. He also was senior class president and received his B.S. in Business Administration and Economics.
After graduation, Lassiter joined Jefferson Pilot Financial in Greensboro as a financial advisor before beginning his sports career in 2002 at Wake Forest University’s athletic development office. He ultimately became Wake’s Assistant Athletic Director for marketing and special projects.
In 2010, Lassiter was named president of the Winston-Salem Dash minor-league baseball team. During his tenure the Dash received awards and recognition including 2010 Baseball Digest Organization of the Year, the fastest Class A Advanced Team to reach 1 million in attendance in a new stadium, 2016 Facility of the Year award by Ballpark Digest, and Best Local Sports Team and best family entertainment in the Winston Salem Journal’s Readers’ Choice Awards from 2014 through 2017. In 2016 Lassiter was named 2016 Carolina League Executive of the Year.
During this time, he was also a co-founder of Rhino Sports and Entertainment Services, a company that specializes in sports venue management.
In the community, Lassiter received the Top 40 under 40 award in the Triad in 2013 and the Under 40 Winston-Salem Leadership Award in 2016. He also is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Winston-Salem and serves on several nonprofit boards.
Lassiter resides in Winston-Salem with his wife, Kiera, and their three children, Porter (8), Wilson (5), and Mary Elizabeth (5).
Greensboro College’s Baccalaureate/Cap & Gown Ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, May 11, in the Gail Brower Huggins Performance Center in Odell Building on campus. Commencement will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, on front campus, rain or shine.
